Team Trip Notes

After five months of research, planning, organizing and fund-raising,

we are finally ready to go!

Trip Notes – Day 1

Friday, September 30, 2011

7:30 a.m. The team members wear their new Chicopee Soccer Polo shirts to school.  Team dismissal at 11:08.  Team eats lunch together at school and then load up the three vans. We take a group photo in front of the school and depart for the Vineyard at 12:10.  Mr. Joyal and Mr. Blain see us off.

We arrive at the Palmer Parking lot in Woods Hole and take a short bus ride to the Steamship Authority Ferry Terminal.  We arrive earlier than planned so we decide to take the 3:45 Ferry into Vineyard Haven instead of the 5:00 p.m. to Oak Bluffs.

3:45 p.m. All Aboard!!  Ferry Departs exactly on time!  The weather is perfect, Coach Chagnon takes his Dramamine pills and holds on tight!  Team is in good spirits as they explore the Ferry and take in the sights.  It’s a 45 minute ferry ride to Vineyard Haven. Several passengers express interest in who we are, and what we are doing.  They are impressed!

The shuttle bus that MVHS provides for visiting school teams is waiting for us in Vineyard Haven. So far so good!  The bus driver is a former resident of South Hadley!  He takes us on a short bus tour of Vineyard Haven on the way to our house in Oak Bluffs.  We drive by the “Captain’s House” portrayed in the movie Jaws, the house where President Obama attends cocktail parties when he is on the island, and the house in which Martin Luther King wrote the “I have a Dream” speech. We drive by the original “Black Dog” restaurant. We can see the tall mast ship “Shenandoah” anchored in the Bay. The “Shenandoah” is owned by the founder of the “Black Dog” brand.  We also see the mansion that the inventor of Norton Antivirus software empire built. The bus driver gave us a nice tour with a lot of  “insider” information and we were able to see a bit more of the island.

We arrive at our house in Oak Bluffs.  It sleeps 24.  Players move into their rooms and get settled in. Everyone is hungry, so after unpacking, the team assembles outside. We take the 8 minute walk to the public transportation bus stop.   The team takes the No. 13 bus on a 12 minute ride to Edgartown for dinner at the Wharf Inn (recommended by the bus driver).  What a wonderful meal!  Good portions and great service.  The team looks sharp, dressed in their Chicopee Soccer Polo shirts.  Many locals stop us along the way to make positive comments about the team and their behavior! Perfect!

We walk to the bus stop after dinner and take the short ride back to the house.  Players set up FIFA x-Box tournament brackets and play for a bit.  They are a little rambunctious. Big day tomorrow… Lights out at 10:30!

Trip Notes – Day 2

Game Day Wake up to Pouring Rain & Thunder. Obsessing with the weather forecast, can’t refresh the weather site fast enough!. Good News…Looks like it’s going to clear up by match time. Game on!

7:00 a.m. wake-up call.  Cooking crew to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.  Eggs, French Toast, Bacon & cereal. Cleaning crew takes care of business after breakfast- good job all around!

8:45 a.m. sharp. Bus departs from house for the trip to Martha’s Vineyard H.S..  Team arrives at 9:05 for the 10:00 a.m. game start. We begin warm-ups.  Rain has stopped and the humidity begins to creep up.  Our Captains hand the Chicopee Soccer Banner to the Vineyard Captains.  The Vineyard team has some big players!

The Game!

0-0 at the end of the first half. Chicopee kicks-off to start the second half. Kory Kibbler scores from a pass from Alex Davidsion Ten (10) seconds into the second half!  Great start!  Vineyard presses, but Chicopee does a great job limiting scoring opportunities.  Chicopee creates a few more chances to score as the game closes out.  Game ends. Chicopee 1-0 Victory! The game is broadcast on the Oak Bluffs Community Television Station! Can’t wait to watch that one!

After the game we take a team photo and return to the house Victorious!  The win is going to make the rest of the weekend so much nicer! Coach Chagnon and Coach Smith fire up the grill at the house while the team showers and cleans up.  Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Kielbasa! No one goes hungry!

1:30 p.m. – Team has free time – they are due back at the house at 5:00.  Some go to the beach, others rent bikes, others explore Circuit Ave.

5:00 p.m. Players assemble at the house at and get ready for our team dinner.  Everyone is particularly excited about this dinner…it’s free!  The car wash fund-raiser was a great success. Each player will have $26.00 for dinner tonight.

6:00 p.m. Team leaves for supper at the Ocean View Restaurant in Oak Bluffs. About a 20 minute walk from the house.  Weather is fantastic, players are in a great mood!

Dinner at the Ocean View is outstanding.  It’s Alex Davidson’s 16th birthday, so Coach Chagnon buys a birthday cake on the walk to the restaurant. We give the cake to the waitress. She brings it out after dinner. Everyone sings happy birthday to Alex. I think he’s surprised.  Nice  ending touch to a great team dinner! (interesting to note that several players approach the coaches during dinner to ask if we can sing Happy Birthday to Alex; they are pleased to know we have a cake coming! Team mates concerned for team mates— outstanding! )

8:00 p.m. Team leaves the Ocean View and walks down Circuit Ave.  Players have a couple of hours free time.  Some go to see parents, others walk the Avenue, a large group plays pool at the Season’s Pub and Restaurant where there is an arcade attached with three pool tables.

9:15 p.m. Most players find their way back to the pool hall.  Tom, Shane, Tim, & Griff come back with a couple of $$’s!  They sang songs on the Corner of Circuit Ave and people actually paid them!!  Team is waiting for 10:00 pm. and the start of Karaoke.

10:00 p.m. Connor gets his chance and belts out a great rendition of MatchBox 20’s Bright Lights in front of a packed house! Instant Star!

10:30 p.m. Getting late, team returns to the house.

11:00 p.m.– Coach Smith and Coach Masse take the team for a walk to the beach – The stars shine brightly with the absence of the big city lights!  Good walk!

11:45 – lights out!  Not too much argument- everyone is tired!

10:45 – a 45 minute ferry ride from Oak Bluffs to Woods Hole.   Team is still in great spirits… but a bit tired!  Coach Chagnon takes his Dramamine pills again. Gorgeous weather. Great view of the ocean and island!
