Congraulations Coach Chagnon!

On December 4, 2015, Chicopee High Soccer Coach Dan Chagnon was recognized by the Pioneer Valley Soccer Officials Association at their 69th Annual Banquet for his contributions to the game of soccer.

Coach Chagnon received a “Letter of Commendation” from the PVSOA.

“Beginning in 1979, the PVSOA began recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of soccer within their community”

Presentation of Award

“Thank you to the PVSOA for giving me the opportunity to present this award tonight.

Having known Dan Chagnon my entire life (literally) I am very happy to present him with this letter of Commendation for his many contributions to the game of soccer.

Dan has had a life-long love for the game of soccer. He is a Graduate of Chicopee Comp High School where he was a four-year starter for the Varsity soccer team. He is the only Western Mass player ever to earn the distinction of being named as an All-Western Mass Division One First Team Selection- in all four years. After high school, he went on to star at UMASS, earning a starting position in his freshman year.

Dan’s involvement with the game did not stop after college; he continued to play, coach and organize teams in the many Western Mass indoor, spring and summer leagues (as we all know– everyone wants to play, but very few people want the responsibility to organize; Dan always did, and in the process, provided the opportunity for scores of soccer players to enjoy the game)

In 1999 Dan worked with John Coburn as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Western New England College. The following year he accepted the Junior Varsity Coaching position at Chicopee High School serving in that capacity for four years before taking over the Varsity coaching position after Rick Nadeau retired.

In 2006, family commitments made the demands of being a head Varsity coach a challenge, however he wanted to stay involved with the program he helped to grow and develop. So he became the volunteer Assistant Varsity Coach at Chicopee High and I have had the great privilege of working with him for the last ten years.

In addition to his 15 years of involvement with the Chicopee High Program and the numerous men’s teams he organized and led, Dan has also been heavily involved at the grass-roots level coaching multiple AJAC youth soccer teams.

He is a referee. He is a competitor. He is a diehard soccer fanatic. He is a role model, mentor and inspiration to his players and most importantly, he has made, and continues to make a difference to everyone he comes in contact with.

In 2009, Dan was inducted into the Chicopee Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a great ambassador for the sport of soccer. He truly is one of my hero’s.

This PVSOA letter of commendation “recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of soccer within their community” and I’m proud to present it to a most worthy recipient, my little cousin, and good friend, Dan Chagnon.”
